Cash Drawer Buying Guide

What is a Cash Drawer?

A cash drawer holds your cash, checks, receipts, gift certificates, or anything else you want! A drawer is usually connected to a receipt printer or computer, which allows it to open automatically. Inside is a till, which is a money tray that can hold coins and bills. The till can be removed from the unit so you can store checks, receipts, gift cards, or other documents underneath.

  • APG Series 100 Cash Drawer
  • Cash/Till Tray

Functions of a Cash Drawer

  • Kick Open – A drawer can be opened from a receipt printer or directly from the computer. When the POS software completes a transaction, it send a signal to open the drawer.
  • Media Slots – Some drawers have slots for a cashier to slide in credit card receipts, gift certificates, or other documents. The documents fall into the bottom of the drawer, under the till, until the till is removed and the documents retrieved.
  • Manual Entry – Most cash drawers come with two keys. These keys can be used to open the drawer manually in case of change, electrical failures, or power outages. Drawers do not necessarily need to be connected to a printer or computer to open.

Types of Cash Drawers

  • Printer-Driven – These are drawers that connect to the DK (Drawer-Kick) port on the back of a receipt printer. Drawer manufacturers provide specialized cables designed to work with a certain brand or type of receipt printer. For example, APG makes a different cable for Epson printers versus Star printers.
  • USB – Uses a USB cable (similar to an mp3 player or digital camera) to connect directly to a computer. These are special-order items that are not compatible with most types of software. Special drivers and software are required.
  • Serial – Serial drawers use a 9-pin serial cable to connect to a computer. A serial drawer is usually used for older software or systems, or systems that do not have receipt printers.

Common Cash Drawer Features

  • Size – The most important feature of a drawer is its size. Some people want to mount a drawer under a counter or need it to fit into a tight area or crowded counter. Space should be a primary concern when dealing with drawers.
  • Removable Interface Cables – Most printer-driven drawers have removable cables. If a user wants to switch from an Epson printer to a Star printer, they only need to get a new cable for the drawer to make it compatible with the new printer.
  • Media Slots – Some drawers have the option of one, two, or even three media slots cut into the front. Some drawers are available without media slots.
