Find the best Cash Drawers for your business

Cash Drawers Buying Guide

Most Common Features | Brands of Cash Drawers | Other Considerations

Overview

POS World offers a wide range of cash drawers. Below are frequently asked questions to help determine the best cash drawer for your business:

  • APG Series 100 Cash Drawer
  • Cash/Till Tray

What are the most common features when selecting a cash drawer?

  • Standard vs. Heavy Duty Drawers – Standard duty drawers are for light to medium volume use in a business. Heavy duty drawers are for higher volume & also have a thicker steel construction so they can bear more weight on the top for other peripherals such as touch monitors and receipt printers.
  • Manual Only vs. Electronic Interface Cash Drawers (More Info on Interfaces) – All cash drawers can be opened manually with a key, but there are also versions which can opened electronically from a printer or directly from a computer using USB, serial, or parallel port.*Note: Electronic lock is a key-position on the drawer's lock which can be disabled by setting the lock to a manual position (see cash drawer manual for more instructions on specific models).
  • Size – Drawers vary in size from as small as 13" in width up to 20". The different sizes of drawers can be due to factors such as # of bills/coins slots or extra storage room for documents underneath the main coin/bill tray.
  • Money / Till Trays – Most cash drawers have a removable top compartment called a money tray / till which separates any loose coins or bills with dividers. The most basic money tray configuration has a 5-coin and 5-bill denomination compartment with the largest denomination configuration having an 8-coin / 5-bill money tray.
  • Mounting Options – All cash drawers can sit on top of a counter but there are also optional mounting brackets to secure a cash drawer underneath a counter.
  • Document / Media Slots – Some drawers have a slot(s) cut into the front-face of the drawer for slipping in receipts, checks, and other paper documents.
  • Front – The front of a drawer can either be coated in the same color as the body (typically either a black or white coated finish) or have a stainless steel finish.
  • Keyed Alike / Keyed Randomly – When cash drawers are purchased on the same order, depending on the keying default of the brand of drawer, they can have the same lock # on all drawers (keyed alike) or each drawer on the order can have a different lock # assigned randomly (keyed randomly).

What are some other considerations?

  • What are key security considerations when purchasing a cash drawer?
    • A cash drawer’s sole purpose is to provide a secure housing for money and important transaction documents during the business day. Below are several key security features on cash drawers:
      • Locks & Keys – If a business has multiple employees and shifts then keys for the cash drawers are typically given to the manager on shift so that employees don’t have easy physical access to the tray.
      • Lids – It’s common for a manager on duty count down a cash till at the end of the day. Most cash drawers on our website also provide an optional locking lid that secures to the top of the money tray when moving the till from the register to the back office.
      • Under-Counter Mounting Brackets – Brackets serve two purposes 1) to save on value counter-space 2) to provide a method of securing the cash drawer under the counter from easy theft and also keeping the drawer out of sight.
  • What types of electronic interfaces are available on cash drawers?
    • Manual Cash Drawers – the drawer only needs a key to kick open the drawer. All cash drawers, regardless if they have an electronic interface or not, can be opened with a key. Manual only cash drawers are most common for businesses that don't plan to use the drawer in conjunction with a computer or other POS hardware.
      • Pros – There are no cables or wiring to worry about plugging in.
      • Cons – A key is the only method to open the cash drawer. If the key is lost and no extras available on-hand then a new key would need to be ordered.
    • Printer Driven Cash Drawers – these types of drawers are connected directly to a receipt printer. The printer is responsible for controlling the electronic signal to pop open the drawer.
      • Pros – A receipt printer and cash drawer are the most common selling and supported POS hardware combination on the market.
      • Cons – The printer driven drawers require a proprietary cash drawer cable (made by the cash drawer manufacturer) that is compatible with the receipt printer. Example: A Star receipt printer would require a compatible Star cable to connect to the cash drawer and printer.
    • USB Cash Drawers – A USB cash drawer can be directly connected to a computer. A USB cash drawer is used most often in situations that require only a cash drawer and no other POS hardware like a receipt printer.
      • Pros – A USB connection is available on almost all desktop & POS computers.
      • Cons – USB cash drawers require that a POS software have built-in support for a specific brand of USB cash drawer. Example: If a POS software states they only work with APG USB cash drawers then an M-S USB cash drawer probably won't work with that software.
    • Serial Cash Drawers – A serial cash drawer can be connected directly to a serial port on a computer. Serial cash drawers, like USB cash drawers, are used in scenarios where the drawer isn't being connected to any other POS hardware like a receipt printer.
      • Serial drawers come in two varieties:
        • Basic/dumb serial drawers can use any electronic signal through the serial port to open the cash drawer.
        • Smart/intelligent serial drawers require a specific code through the serial port to open the cash drawer.
      • Pros – Serial cash drawers should work with any POS software vendors which state they support serial cash drawers. Basic serial drawers are recommended when the POS software doesn’t specify which type of serial drawer they support.
      • Cons – Serial ports have become legacy ports and are no longer widely available on consumer computers. POS desktop computers and POS touch computers are usually the only computers with built-in serial ports (always make sure to check the datasheet of any computer to confirm it has the proper ports).
    • Parallel Cash Drawers – A parallel cash drawer is similar to serial cash drawers where it’s looking for an electronic signal through the parallel port of the computer to pop open. Parallel ports are no longer manufactured on most consumer and POS computers.
