Customer Display Buying Guide

What is a Customer Display?

A customer display is used to provide information to the customer. This could be anything from the price of an item to the total amount or change due at the point-of-sale, even small advertisements or greetings. Customer displays are often used in grocery stores, drug stores/pharmacies, liquor stores, and convenience stores, among many other types of applications.

What does a customer display do?

Customer displays are primarily used to display item pricing and subtotal/total amounts at a cash register. For example, when you are paying for items in a grocery store, the customer display often shows the cost of the item that was rung up, a subtotal at the end of the transaction, and the amount of change due to the customer.

Customer displays are also used to display promotions, greetings, or even just the name of the company. Most closed registers will display a short message to that effect.

Common Features of Customer Displays

  • VFD vs. LCD – The most common type of customer display is a VFD, Vacuum Fluorescent Display. These are the green displays most common to gas stations and grocery stores. Limited to 2 rows of 20 characters each, a VFD usually gets the job done. Since LCD display technology is abundant, newer customer displays may consist of a 5-inch or 7-inch LCD display. LCDs allow full-color, full-motion technology, just like a normal LCD computer monitor but smaller.
  • Shape & Size – In grocery stores, customer displays are often located atop stands or poles, leading to the commonly-used term “pole display”.  Some customers prefer table-top models, while others prefer displays integrated into the back of a touchmonitor.
  • Emulations – Customer displays made by certain brands often speak a certain language. For example, base-model Logic Controls displays only speak Logic Controls' language. Other displays can be swapped to  different languages, such as AEDEX, UTC, or EPSON.

Common Customer Displays

  • Logic Controls (Bematech)
  • PD3000 – Logic Controls' basic, entry-level pole display. Comes in serial (PD3000) or USB (PD3000U) connections, choice of off-white or dark-gray color, and optional extended or shortened poles are available. Also available in a variety of emulations.
  • PD6000 – Logic Controls' basic pole display with larger characters, making slightly easier to read than a PD3000. Comes in serial or USB, choice of off-white or dark-gray color, and optional extended or shortened poles are available. Also available in a variety of emulations.
  • TD3000 – This is essentially an entry-level table-top display similar to the PD3000, just a different shape. Available in serial or USB (TD3000U), choice of off-white or dark-gray color, and choice of emulations available.
  • PartnerTech
  • CD-7220 – PartnerTech's most-common (and possibly only) series of pole display. Comes in serial or USB connections, can also be swapped to different emulations via a configuration utility available from Partner's website.
  • Epson
  • DM-D110 – Epson's pole display. Unit can connect to a TM-series receipt printer or PC's serial port. Available in black. Unit designed to be installed onto a counter or under a printer, so an optional base is available for stand-alone use.
